Furniture Design Development

Learn the skills needed to develop and realise your furniture design ideas. You will be able to test your concept by building a full scale model - which can be taken home to consider for further refinement.

Suitable for students who have previously taken a course at the studio or who have had some previous workshop experience.

Bring along your design inspiration, sketches and images for an achievable, moderate sized piece of wooden cabinetry or stool. You will be guided through the process of developing your idea at full scale through a process of full scale orthographic drawing along with a component cutting list. Together we will explore the structural and aesthetic elements for successful resolution of each project with appropriate jointing options, then build it in construction grade timber. As time allows we can develop finished timber and joinery samples to inform the ongoing process.

You will then be able to take your full scale model home for in-situ testing and reflection to enable any additional modifications. A further five day course can then be scheduled to enable you to realise the final design in your chosen materials.

Student Testimonial

“The Furniture Design Development class teaches you how to take your idea and turn it into a practical design and finished piece. Isabelle takes you through her structured approach to this process, from creating detailed drawings, building a scale model and a full-scale mock-up. By following this method, you get to identify any potential structural, joinery or assembly issues before attempting the final piece. Isabelle’s relaxed teaching style makes for a fun and creative learning experience.

The proof was that when I built the final piece it came together easily as all the critical points, difficulties (and mistakes) had been ironed out. I have since used this process on other projects with great success. This class has opened up the range of furniture projects that I can now take on with confidence. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to expand their furniture making horizons. Prior to taking this class, I also completed the Machine Training class. I’d recommend this as well, as the ability to work independently in the machine shop added to the whole experience of working in a studio environment.” - Mike Ramsay
